Frequently Asked Questions

I have diabetes, am I at high risk?

Yes, you are at high risk for complications from the coronavirus. If your blood sugar has been running on the higher side, then you may be at an even higher risk. Please work with your providers or contact us to bring your sugars down.

I have hypothyroidism, am I at risk?

Well controlled hypothyroidism is not considered a risk. Untreated hypothyroidism is another story.

If I am placed on steroids during COVID 19 infection, then what will I do?

Steroid is occasionally used during respiratory illness including COVID 19. If you have diabetes, we expect your sugars to spike and insulin is usually required to manage it. We can help you control your sugars.

I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, am I at risk?

Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disease leading to hypothyroidism. If hypothyroidism is well controlled, Hashimoto’s disease is unlikely to pose additional risk.

Can I go to work with Diabetes during this "stay at home order"?

We generally advise against working or going out in crowded areas. We have advised our high risk population such as those with uncontrolled diabetes to stay at home.

I have Grave's disease/hyperthyroidism, am I at risk?

Stable controlled Graves disease is unlikely to pose additional risk. If you take steroid, steroid can weaken your immune system.

Uncontrolled Hyperthyroidism, am I at risk?

Untreated hyperthyroidism can make your heart and respiratory function weak as well as  suppress your bone marrow leading to further complications during a major illness.

I am on methimazole, should I be worried?

Methimazole is a useful drug to treat hyperthyroidism and often a necessary evil. Unless the rare adverse reaction of low neutrophil count or liver damage occurs, you need to continue methimazole to control hyperthyroidism. .
